Lawrence Bros History:

1927- Harry Lawrence started the business by sharpening mowers; he used pushbike and trailer sharpeners at home. He passed away in 1932.

1932-The business was passed on to his son Raymond, who successfully operated as a sole trader for twenty-two years and traded as R.H Lawrence.

1948- Council made him cease trading at Bexley and he purchased a property at 15 Norman St Peakhurst. For the first couple of years there was no electricity in site so he used an old T model Ford to drive his grinders with V’ belts from the rear wheels.

1954- Raymond’s brother Keith came in as a partner and the business name was changed to “Lawrence Bros”.

1959- Norman St site become the main repair centre for all the stores. It was not long before Lawrence Bros had opened five new showrooms in Hurstville, Parramatta, Caringbah, Bankstown and Ryde.

Within, four years the company sold over 6000 Victa mowers and carried 42 brands. Lawrence Bros was the Australia’s largest lawnmower specialist, employing 160 employees and 15 mechanics.

1967-68 Company went into liquidation; however the Peakhurst service centre was not affected since it was separate company and the Hurstville store was purchased back from liquidators. The two brothers divided the stores, where Ray managed the Peakhurst store and Keith managed the Hurstville store. (eventually closed)

1974 - John Lubben purchased the Peakhurst store.

1977 - Mr Lubben moved his business from Norman St to the corner of Forest Rd and Cronulla St.

1986 –The business was sold to Brad Hannan.

1988 - Wendy and Graham Church purchased the business from Brad Hannan.

2002 – Established a second store located at Leppington.

2004 – Relocated the Hurstville business to a purpose built premise located at Peakhurst, just around the corner from where Lawrence Bros had originally commenced operating 56 years earlier.

2006 – Merged with Penrith Mowers to form GYC Pty Ltd.
